HISTORY OF THE PEUGEOT FAMILY

 

FAMILY ADVENTURE

Flagship of French industry, PEUGEOT is one of the main pioneers of the global automobile industry. Over more than 2 centuries, the brand's activities have developed around passion and technological challenge.

1810

TRANSFORMATION OF THE FAMILY GRAIN MILL INTO A STEEL MILL

Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frédéric Peugeot diversify their activity with the production of steel ribbons for sewing and saw blades and springs for watchmaking.

1891

LAUNCH AND MARKETING OF THE TYPE 3 IN SERIES

The first car in the world to be mass-produced (64 examples), the type 3 traveled from Valentigney to Paris and followed the first Paris-Brest-Paris cycling race over 2045 km. In January 1893, the PEUGEOT type 3 was the first car to run in Italy.

1896

SEPARATION OF TRADITIONAL AND AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING

The sons of Peugeot Frères continued traditional manufacturing (cycles, tools, etc.) while Armand Peugeot created the Société Anonyme des Automobiles PEUGEOT.

1897

CONSTRUCTION OF THE 1ST AUTOMOTIVE PLANT IN AUDINCOURT, DOUBS

Abandonment of the workshops for installation in the first factory dedicated entirely to automobiles in Audincourt (25). A second factory became operational in Lille (59) in 1898.

1905

PRESENTATION OF LION PEUGEOT CARS

The sons of Peugeot Frères also engage in automobile production under the Lion PEUGEOT brand with a range different from Automobiles Peugeot, thus avoiding competition.

1910

GROUPING OF PRODUCTIONS

Association of the sons of Peugeot Frères with Armand Peugeot and creation of the Société Anonyme des Automobiles et Cycles PEUGEOT. All manufacturing is now part of the same entity.

1912

CREATION OF THE SOCHAUX FACTORY

In 1929, it brought together all of Automobiles PEUGEOT's production and became the largest industrial site in France.

 

In 2012, it celebrated its 100th anniversary, making it the oldest automobile factory still in operation in the world to this day.

1965

BIRTH OF PSA

“PSA” (Peugeot Société Anonyme) was founded to form the holding company of the automobile group of the same name which owns all the companies of the PEUGEOT Group.

 

The creation of the “PSA PEUGEOT Citroën” group took place in 1976 through the merger of Citroën S.A. and PEUGEOT S.A.

 

“PSA PEUGEOT Citroën” became “PSA Group” in 2016 and symbolizes the dynamism of its 3 strong automobile brands, PEUGEOT, Citroën and DS, as well as all of the Group’s other activities, current and future.

1982

CREATION OF THE PEUGEOT ADVENTURE

Pierre Peugeot created “© L’Aventure PEUGEOT”, an association under the 1901 law, whose mission is to safeguard the heritage of the PEUGEOT brands.

 

The PEUGEOT Adventure Museum in Sochaux has welcomed between 50,000 and 60,000 visitors per year since its opening in 1988.

 

In 2015, L’Aventure PEUGEOT became L’Aventure PEUGEOT Citroën DS and brings together all the collections of the PSA Groupe brands.

2010

PEUGEOT CELEBRATES ITS BICENTENNIAL

Among the global automotive pioneers still in activity,

PEUGEOT is one of the only ones where the descendants of the founders are still present in its capital and its management.
