Less than a year after the reveal of the model which presented its concept and only five months after the start of its track testing program, the Peugeot TotalEnergies team unveils its racing car: the PEUGEOT 9X8, 4-wheel drive Hybrid Hypercar (electric). This will make its competitive debut at Monza, for the 4th round of the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The countdown for PEUGEOT has started.
Allure for design, Emotion for the pleasure of driving and passion for competition, Technological excellence: the three founding pillars of PEUGEOT guide this competition program, this return to Endurance, and, in particular, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an extraordinary event ideal for assessing and validating skills and technologies.
After the victorious 905 and 908, the PEUGEOT 9X8, the latest original creation of the French brand, will make its debut on the WEC tracks, bringing a new look to the discipline.
This disruptive Hypercar, which is distinguished first of all by the absence of a rear wing in compliance with the new Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) ACO/FIA regulations, reflects PEUGEOT's strategy: a unique look characterized by its feline posture and its silhouette of unprecedented purity, strong brand identification with optics and a three-claw light signature typical of production models, highlighting its technological know-how, electrification hybridization essential to the energy transition.
Sports and technological challenge
The PEUGEOT 9X8 is a 4-wheel drive hybrid electric prototype, powered by a hybrid powertrain entirely produced by the Peugeot Sport teams.
A 2.6 liter, twin-turbo V6 of 520 kW delivers its power to the rear wheels, and two 200 kW electric motors drive the front wheels.
The 900 V high voltage battery is co-developed with TotalEnergies / Saft. Marelli ensures the engineering and supply of a specific high-performance electric motor and a silicon carbide-based inverter, which make up the electric traction system of the front axle.
Michelin supplies 31/31 tires, complying with the original Hypercar regulations, in force at the time of Peugeot's commitment.
The dimensions of the PEUGEOT 9X8 are:
a length of 4.995 m,
a width of 2 m,
a height of 1,145 m.
It weighs 1030 kg, and its tank has a capacity of 90 l of 100% renewable TotalEnergies fuel, excellium racing 100.
Le travail en collaboration entre les équipes du Design de Matthias Hossann et du Sport d’Olivier Jansonnie, à un niveau unique jusqu’à présent, a livré une auto, racée, extrême, qui casse les codes.
During the presentation of the model announcing the concept of the PEUGEOT 9X8 in July 2021, many people thought that the absence of a rear wing would be limited to pure intention.
The interpretation of the LMH ACO/FIA regulations encouraged the team of Olivier Jansonnie, technical director of Peugeot Sport, to opt for this solution.
Track tests, carried out since December, on 5 different tracks with particular characteristics (Portimao, Le Castellet, Motorland Aragon, Barcelona and Magny-Cours) have confirmed this inventive concept: the racing car presented at Portimao as a prelude to a new test session will be consistent with the vision presented by the 2021 model.
More than 10,000 kilometers of tests were carried out in 25 days by the PEUGEOT 9X8.
At the same time, the work of homologating the car was carried out with the FIA teams, while the men of François Coudrain, director of Powertrain, developed their powertrain on the bench, in the simulator and on the track.
A strong team of know-how
To excel on the track and on the road, Team Peugeot TotalEnergies joins forces with international partners, essential in development and recognized in their areas of expertise:
Capgemini (artificial intelligence) and Peugeot Sport are working jointly on strategies aimed at optimizing the efficiency of the 9X8 - in particular energy management, both during acceleration and regeneration.
Peugeot Sport and Modex compare their ideas, their inspirations, their visions of technology and innovation in order to generate synergy and take advantage of the connections between their brands.
The iconic Italian brand of competition clothing, Sparco, provides the Team with essential competition safety equipment.
The Danish teams at Jack & Jones have developed a specific official outfit to dress each member of Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.
And, BBM Sport, which maintains the myth of the 905 and 908 on the track, remains once again faithful to PEUGEOT and its history.
All are driven by the spirit of competition, innovation and progress, which are essential to perform.
